Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano.

This followed the dissolution of four emirate councils by the Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday morning. The emirate councils were created by the immediate past administration of Dr Abdullahi Ganduje.

The state assembly passed the Kano State Emirate Council amendment Bill after it scaled the second and third readings, thereby repealing the law establishing the four emirates and consequently reinstating Sanusi, who was dethroned by Ganduje’s administration in 2020 under a controversial circumstance.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, will according to sources, sign the bill into law today.

Observers had said the creation of the four emirates was a political strategy to whittle down the influence of HRH Sanusi, who was then a vocal critic of Ganduje’s administration.

Meanwhile, Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has congratulated Sanusi on his reinstatement as the Emir of Kano.

In a statement released on Thursday, Fubara’s spokesman, Nelson Chukwudi, said the governor received the news of the reinstatement of Sanusi with great excitement, adding that it came at a time Khalifa Sanusi II was in the State “to add impetus to his administration’s initiative to reshape the economic trajectory of the State.”

Governor Fubara also urged Sanusi who is “the spiritual leader of the Tijanniyah Sufi order of Nigeria, Emir Muhammad Sanusi II, to lead the over 50 million adherents of the Sufi order in Nigeria with love, wisdom and courage while bringing lasting peace, justice, equity and fairness to all in the city of Kano.

“He wished the 14th Emir of Kano a successful and fruitful reign that will bring progress and prosperity to the people of the State,” the statement added.
