Tanker Overturns at Tincan Liverpool Bridge, Apapa; Residents Seen Scooping Spilled Diesel

A diesel-laden tanker overturned at the Tincan Liverpool Bridge area of Apapa, Lagos, early Monday morning, spilling its contents and prompting a rush of residents to collect the fuel from underneath the bridge, Prime Business Africa reports.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker tipped over during the morning rush hour, causing a partial blockage of the busy bridge. Video footage circulating on social media shows residents and passersby scooping the spilled diesel, a practice that authorities have repeatedly warned against due to the high risk of fire and explosions.

Emergency Response Efforts

Personnel from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, and the police are on the scene, diverting traffic and working to contain the spill. Authorities have yet to release official figures regarding injuries or casualties.

The incident has raised immediate safety concerns, as past cases of fuel collection from overturned tankers in Nigeria have occasionally resulted in fatal accidents. Residents are urged to stay clear of the spill and allow emergency services to manage the situation.
