Rivers Impeachment Crisis Deepens as Assembly Insists on Fubara’s Removal

January 16, 2026

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its resolve to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, declaring that the process is constitutional and unavoidable despite calls for reconciliation.

This position was restated during a press briefing by the House leadership on Friday, coming shortly after four lawmakers who had earlier withdrawn from the impeachment proceedings reversed their decision and declared support for the governor’s removal.

Addressing journalists, the Assembly said it was compelled to speak out due to what it described as growing misinformation surrounding the impeachment.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly wishes to address the public on recent developments concerning the impeachment proceedings against the Governor and his Deputy,” the lawmakers said.

They maintained that the process was being carried out strictly within the law, stressing: “Let it be clearly stated that this House has acted strictly within the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). At no time have we acted outside our constitutional mandate.”

The Assembly accused the executive arm of persistent constitutional violations, including alleged financial improprieties. According to the lawmakers, “Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy have continued to act in total disregard for the authority of this Assembly. Funds have been withdrawn and expended from the Consolidated Revenue Fund of Rivers State without legislative approval.”

They also alleged that the executive had repeatedly failed to comply with legislative oversight. “We have observed persistent refusal by the executive arm to present statutory documents before this House, including budgetary and expenditure frameworks, despite repeated resolutions,” the briefing stated.

Responding to claims that the impeachment was politically motivated or driven by external forces, the Assembly dismissed such assertions as unfounded. “The claim that the impeachment process is politically motivated or influenced by external forces is false and misleading. This process was initiated solely on the basis of alleged gross misconduct,” the lawmakers said.

The House also explained the recent internal divisions that saw four members temporarily withdraw from the proceedings, noting that their action was in the interest of peace. However, it added that reconciliation could not override constitutional obligations. “Members who earlier expressed reservations did so in the interest of peace. However, peace cannot replace constitutional order. Any reconciliation must be founded on respect for the law,” the Assembly said.

Reaffirming its stance, the lawmakers stressed their oath of office, saying: “As lawmakers, we swore an oath to uphold the Constitution. We cannot watch while due process is trampled upon under the guise of governance.”

They concluded that the impeachment process would continue until the alleged breaches were addressed. “The House therefore maintains its position that the impeachment proceedings will continue until all constitutional breaches are addressed,” the statement read.

While urging calm among residents, the Assembly sought to reassure the public that the situation remained under control. “We urge the people of Rivers State to remain calm and law-abiding. There is no cause for panic. Legislative processes are ongoing, and no individual is above the law. This House remains open to lawful engagement, but we will not abdicate our responsibilities.”

The renewed backing of the impeachment by the four lawmakers is expected to further harden positions within the Assembly and dim hopes of an immediate political settlement, as the standoff between the executive and legislature continues to dominate Rivers State’s political landscape.
