The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the re-arrest of human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, on allegations of violating existing laws during a recent protest in Abuja.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Thursday, said Sowore was taken into custody after allegedly breaching a court order restricting demonstrations in certain high-security areas within the Federal Capital Territory.
“Sowore broke the law and he will be charged,” Hundeyin said, noting that while the police recognise the citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly, such rights must be exercised within the limits of the law.

The arrest reportedly followed a protest staged near the National Assembly Complex, an area covered by an existing Federal High Court injunction prohibiting demonstrations around sensitive government institutions, including the Presidential Villa.
Hundeyin added that the activist will be prosecuted in accordance with relevant legal provisions once investigations are concluded.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting the rights of citizens while ensuring that public order and safety are not compromised,” the statement read.
As of press time, the police have not announced a formal arraignment date.
