Niger Tightens Inspections on Nigerian Goods Amid Regional Security Concerns

December 9, 2025

The Republic of Niger has ordered stricter inspections on all goods entering from Nigeria, particularly items classified as “miscellaneous,” requiring them to be unloaded and cleared at border entry points before any transit procedures, according to a directive signed by Colonel Mohamed Yacouba Siddo, Director‑General of Niger’s Customs Service.

Colonel Siddo emphasized that the rules must be enforced without exception, noting that goods will be cleared only if supported by valid documentation from recognized ports of discharge.

Trade between Nigeria and Niger, which typically spans foodstuffs, manufactured products, fuel, and consumer goods, has already been affected since the Nigerien military seized power in July 2023. Analysts say the new inspection measures are likely to increase logistics costs for Nigerian exporters. Border traders report that moving a standard truckload of miscellaneous goods usually around ₦1.5 million ($1,050) could become more expensive due to extended handling and delays at border points.

The stricter inspections come amid heightened instability in West Africa. On December 7, a failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin added to regional unease, while the Confederation of Sahel States claims that Burkina Faso detained eleven Nigerian military personnel for allegedly violating its airspace.

Nigeria has rejected the allegation, with the Nigerian Air Force stating that the aircraft involved made an emergency landing due to a technical fault and complied fully with airspace procedures.

Observers say the new customs directive forms part of broader security measures by Sahel nations to mitigate perceived threats from Nigeria, particularly following its involvement in foiling the Benin coup attempt and the recent airspace incident in Burkina Faso.

Prime Business Africa will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on the implications for trade and regional security.
