Kosofe LG Chairman Denies Assault on Journalist, Blames Political Opponents

March 13, 2026

The Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area in Lagos State, Moyo Ogunlewe, has denied allegations that a journalist, Habeeb Adejobi, was attacked within the premises of the council secretariat on Wednesday.

Ogunlewe while reacting to online reports claiming that Adejobi, said to be affiliated with MITV, was assaulted while attempting to cover the screening and swearing-in of supervisory councillors at the local government secretariat.

The chairman dismissed the allegation, stating that no journalist was attacked and that the incident was being misrepresented by political opponents.

According to him, he personally noticed the cameraman when he entered the premises and began setting up his equipment. Ogunlewe said he approached the individual to ask about his identity and affiliation but was unable to verify his credentials.

“I saw a man setting up a camera in the premises and asked where he was from. He said he came from a TV station but had no identification card or proof that he was a genuine journalist,” Ogunlewe said.

He added that the individual initially claimed to be from Arise Television and produced a document to support the claim, but later reports identified him as being from MITV, a development the chairman described as suspicious.

Ogunlewe said the man was subsequently taken to the Ogudu Police Station for questioning after failing to properly identify himself.
“Adejobi claimed to come from Arise Television, but Arise said nobody bears such name. He also claimed he was sent by someone called Samuel,” he said.
“We took him to the Ogudu Police Station when we caught him setting up a camera in the local government secretariat to give a statement because he was unable to produce an identification card or any document confirming his assignment.”

The chairman further alleged that the incident was part of a plot by political opponents to embarrass his administration, linking it to a previous incident at ACME several months ago.
“What happened is linked to an incident at ACME many months ago. He was sent by our opponents to embarrass us. Nobody was attacked in our local government. My political opponents are at work,” Ogunlewe said.

A senior staff member at the council, who also spoke on the matter, said officers from the Ogudu Police Station, including the Divisional Police Officer and the Area Commander, requested that the individual write a statement detailing the alleged assault, but he was reportedly unable to provide one.

“We know that some political opponents are at work but we are not deterred. We must keep working on the dream we are pursuing. We are not moved by blackmail,” the staff member said.
