Iran Women’s Team Stands Silent During Anthem at Asian Cup Opener

March 3, 2026

The Iran women’s national football team made a striking statement on Monday night at the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, standing in silence as their national anthem played ahead of their opening match.

The incident occurred at CBus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast, where Iran faced the South Korea women’s national football team in their Group A opener. Lined up in customary pre-match formation, the Iranian players looked straight ahead and remained largely motionless as the anthem played over the stadium speakers.

Broadcast footage showed the squad maintaining a stoic posture throughout the anthem. Audible jeers could be heard from sections of the crowd, though applause later erupted around the stadium following South Korea’s 3–0 victory.

Head coach Marziyeh Jafari was seen on the touchline during the anthem, appearing calm and at one point smiling as she looked toward her players.

Neither the players nor team officials issued an immediate public explanation for the gesture.

However, international media outlets, including Fox News, reported that the silence was widely interpreted by observers as a symbolic act amid ongoing tensions and scrutiny over women’s rights and political freedoms in Iran.

The moment quickly drew global attention on social media and international broadcasts, echoing similar scenes at the 2022 FIFA World Cup when members of Iran’s men’s national team refrained from singing the anthem during group-stage matches.

Tournament organisers have not announced any disciplinary measures, and Iran are expected to continue their group campaign later this week under heightened international focus.

While the team has yet to publicly clarify its stance, the silent pre-match moment has become one of the defining images of the tournament’s opening round.
