Iran Warns Ukraine Could Become ‘Legitimate Target’ Over Alleged Drone Support to Israel

March 15, 2026

Iran has warned that Ukraine could be treated as a “legitimate target” if it assists Israel in countering Iranian-made drones, a statement that risks deepening the geopolitical overlap between the war in Eastern Europe and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The warning was issued by Ebrahim Azizi, head of the parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Commission in Iran.

In a statement posted on social media and reported by Iranian state media, Azizi said Ukraine had “effectively entered the war” by allegedly providing drone-related support to Israel.

According to Azizi, such involvement would allow Tehran to consider Ukrainian territory a legitimate target under the right to self-defence outlined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The Iranian lawmaker did not present evidence to support the claim that Kyiv had directly supplied drones to Israel.

The remarks come as tensions escalate across the Middle East following exchanges of missiles and drones involving Iran, Israel and their regional allies.

Ukraine has gained significant experience countering Iranian-designed drones during its ongoing war with Russia. Russian forces have repeatedly deployed the Shahed-131 and Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicles widely believed by Western governments to be supplied by Iran in strikes on Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said that at least 11 countries had approached Kyiv for assistance in dealing with Iranian-designed drones. According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine has developed specialised expertise in detecting, tracking, jamming and intercepting the systems after years of defending against repeated drone attacks.

Ukrainian officials say this cooperation involves technical advice and defensive knowledge rather than direct combat involvement, aimed at helping partner countries strengthen their air-defence systems against drone threats.

Kyiv has repeatedly accused Tehran of supplying drones to Russia for use in the war, allegations supported by Western governments though consistently denied by Iranian authorities.

Analysts say Azizi’s warning reflects Tehran’s sensitivity to any military cooperation that could strengthen Israel’s ability to counter Iranian drones and weapons systems.  Observers also note that the same drone technology now links multiple conflicts, with weapons manufactured in Iran, deployed by Russia in Ukraine, and countered using expertise developed on the Ukrainian battlefield.

Security analysts say the dispute illustrates how drone warfare has created new strategic connections between conflicts that were previously geographically separate, complicating diplomatic relations and military alliances across regions.

While Iran’s warning has not been accompanied by any announced military action, analysts say such rhetoric from senior figures within the Iranian security establishment signals intensifying geopolitical positioning as countries exchange technology and expertise to counter drone warfare that has become a defining feature of modern conflicts.
