Appeal Court Dismisses Turaki Faction’s Appeal, Upholds Suspension of Anyanwu, Three Others in PDP Crisis

March 9, 2026

The Court of Appeal in Abuja on Monday dismissed an appeal filed by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Tanimu Turaki, affirming an earlier ruling that halted the party’s disputed national convention and deepening the legal battle over the party’s leadership.

In a unanimous judgment delivered by a three-member panel, the appellate court upheld the decision of the Federal High Court which restrained the party from proceeding with its controversial national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convention, held on November 15 and 16, had produced Turaki as a factional national chairman, a development that further intensified the leadership tussle within the main opposition party.

The appellate court held that the appeal by the Turaki-led faction lacked merit and affirmed that the Federal High Court was right to assume jurisdiction over the matter.

The justices also rejected arguments that the dispute was strictly an internal affair of the party and therefore beyond the jurisdiction of the courts.

In a related ruling, the court upheld the suspension of four key national officers of the party, including former National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu.

Others affected by the ruling are the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed; National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade; and National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature.

The appellate court affirmed the earlier judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, which validated the suspension of the officials.

Consequently, the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and awarded costs of ₦2 million against the Turaki faction.

Earlier on Monday, leaders of the opposing factions were seen exchanging pleasantries at the Court of Appeal complex in Abuja ahead of the judgment, reflecting the high-stakes nature of the legal contest over the party’s leadership.

The latest ruling is expected to further shape the ongoing struggle over the PDP’s national leadership structure and the legitimacy of decisions taken by rival factions within the party.
