Police Dismiss Sowore’s Allegations of Weak Leadership Against New IGP Disu

March 7, 2026

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed allegations by activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, accusing the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, of showing early signs of weak leadership, Prime Business Africa reports.

Sowore had earlier raised concerns in a lengthy post on his verified X handle, where he claimed that the early days of Disu’s tenure were already marked by “troubling signs” suggesting indecisiveness in managing the affairs of the police.

According to him, such perceived weakness could embolden what he described as “rogue elements” within the force.

He cited the case involving UK-based Nigerian blogger Maureen Badejo as an example, alleging that she had been unfairly targeted by police following complaints from two prominent clerics Johnson Suleman, General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International, and Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.

Badejo was initially arraigned before a magistrate court on cybercrime charges but was granted bail. Sowore alleged that officers handling the case, reportedly led by a police superintendent, attempted to rearrest her and return her to prison custody despite the bail order.

He further claimed that Badejo later travelled to Abuja following an invitation from the office of the IGP, where the Inspector-General’s Principal Staff Officer, Ahmed Lateef, reportedly met with her and another complainant, Tracy Nicolas Ohiri, alongside human rights lawyer Marshal Abubakar.

According to Sowore, Lateef apologised during the meeting and assured them that the new IGP would not want his tenure associated with abuse of citizens’ rights. However, he said subsequent events suggested otherwise.

He alleged that after Badejo returned to Lagos, the police unit handling the case replaced the prosecutor with another officer and proceeded with fresh arraignment plans.

The matter was eventually brought before Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos, where Badejo was arraigned. The case has now been adjourned until March 16, 2026.

Sowore argued that the handling of the matter reflected what he described as a conciliatory leadership style by the new IGP, warning that such an approach could allow abusive practices within the force to persist.

But responding on X, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police leadership would not be pressured into taking actions outside due process.

“The IGP will not be goaded into taking needless actions. The case is already before a court of competent jurisdiction and is progressing well,” Hundeyin said.

He added that the force would not be swayed by “sentiments or emotional blackmail,” stressing that Disu remained committed to professionalism within the police.

According to him, the Inspector-General is determined to ensure discipline within the ranks and will sanction any officer found culpable of misconduct.

“IGP Olatunji Disu remains resolute in ensuring professionalism amongst his officers while equally asserting that any officer found wanting would be decisively sanctioned, as no officer is above the law,” the police spokesman said.
