Nigerian-Born Doctor Kika Otiono Honoured with Leading Women, Leading Girls Award in Canada

A Nigerian-born Canadian medical doctor, Kika Otiono, has been recognised with the Orleans Leading Women, Leading Girls Recognition Award in Canada in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

Otiono received the honour at a ceremony held in Ottawa on March 6, where the award was presented by Member of Parliament Marie-France Lalonde. The annual recognition celebrates women and girls who have made notable contributions to community development in Orléans.

The event, which drew a large turnout, featured a women’s breakfast and the presentation of certificates to 31 honourees. A 10-year-old award recipient also delivered a rendition of the Canadian national anthem during the ceremony.

While presenting the award, Lalonde commended Otiono’s academic accomplishments and commitment to service, noting that her efforts have had a meaningful impact on the Orléans community.

Otiono is currently a third-year surgical resident in the Division of Urology at the University of Ottawa. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from McMaster University and also holds a Graduate Certificate in Health Professions Education from the University of Saskatchewan.

An alumna of Carleton University, she graduated with a Senate Medal and was later profiled by the institution in recognition of her academic achievements.

Beyond her clinical training, Otiono has played active roles in advocacy, mentorship and community engagement. She founded the Black Women in Medicine and Health group at Carleton University and served as the inaugural Director of Advocacy and Representation for the Black Medical Students’ Association of Canada, contributing to national conversations on equity in medical education.

In a letter accompanying the recognition, Marie-France Lalonde said the award was conferred on Kika Otiono in acknowledgement of her passion, dedication and the positive impact she has made within the Orléans community.

Reacting to the honour, Otiono’s father, Nduka Otiono, Director of the Institute of African Studies at Carleton University, expressed pride in his daughter’s achievement and thanked Lalonde for her continued service to the Orléans community.
