El-Rufai Family Accuses ICPC of ‘Phantom’ Wiretap Claims, Alleges Forged Search Warrant

Why President Tinubu Rejected Me As Ministerial Nominee – El-Rufai

The family of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has issued a strongly worded statement denying allegations by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) that surveillance devices were recovered from his Abuja residence, Prime Business Africa Reports.

In a statement dated March 2, 2026, and signed by his son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, the family described the commission’s claims as false and politically motivated, insisting that no wiretapping equipment was found during the search.

The lawmaker, who represents Kaduna North Federal Constituency, said he had initially stayed off social media during Ramadan but chose to respond in order to “put an end to a blatant lie.”
The ICPC had alleged in court filings that suspected phone-tapping equipment and sensitive security documents were seized during a raid on El-Rufai’s residence. The commission also claimed the former governor declined to cooperate with investigators, opting to remain silent.

Responding, the family argued that the right to remain silent is constitutionally guaranteed and cannot be construed as non-cooperation.
“Our father has said in all interactions with law enforcement: ‘Charge me, if you have anything against me. You have had more than two years to investigate me. Take me to court please,’” the statement read.

On the alleged recovery of surveillance devices, the family maintained that only personal effects were taken from the house.

“We were present when these items were seized. No equipment other than old discarded personal mobile phones, some dating back as much as 20 years, storage devices like flash drives and laptops, which are standard possessions of any 21st-century citizen, were seized from the property,” the statement said.

El-Rufai’s wife, Hadiza Isma, had earlier dismissed the allegation in a separate post, stating: “I was there. No such equipment was found. They lie. But why? An agency with no credibility at all.”

The family further alleged that the search warrant used for the operation was defective and fraudulently procured, claiming it was issued under questionable jurisdiction. They said their legal team has challenged the validity of the warrant in court.

The ICPC has yet to publicly respond to the fresh allegations regarding the warrant.

The dispute is part of a broader legal battle in which El-Rufai is contesting what he describes as unlawful detention and violations of his fundamental human rights.

As proceedings continue, both parties remain locked in sharply conflicting accounts over the nature of the items allegedly recovered and the legality of the search operation.
