Burkina Faso Abolishes Visa Fees for All African Travelers to Boost Trade, Tourism

September 12, 2025

Burkina Faso has announced the removal of visa fees for all African nationals in a bid to strengthen Pan-African ties, encourage tourism, and ease the movement of people and goods across the continent.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana disclosed the decision on Thursday after a cabinet meeting chaired by the country’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

“From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to go to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees,” Sana said.

Visa Still Required

Despite the waiver, visitors must still apply for and obtain a visa through Burkina Faso’s online application portal for approval before travel. Sana emphasized that the move eliminates costs, not the administrative process.

Regional Context and Significance

The West African nation joins Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya in easing entry requirements for African travelers, reflecting a growing trend of African states promoting free movement under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.

Citizens of West African countries already enjoy visa-free travel to Burkina Faso through the ECOWAS protocol, but this could evolve after Burkina Faso’s recent withdrawal alongside Mali and Niger from the regional bloc.

A statement from the government’s information service said the policy demonstrates the country’s commitment to Pan-Africanism, adding that it will “help promote tourism and Burkinabe culture, and improve Burkina Faso’s visibility abroad.”

The Bigger Picture

The reform is expected to reduce travel costs, attract investors, and stimulate cross-border trade at a time when Burkina Faso faces economic strain and a worsening Islamist insurgency.

Observers see the visa fee removal as a strategic attempt by the Traoré-led junta to strengthen regional ties and boost the economy despite ongoing security and political challenges.

While an official rollout date has not been announced, travelers are advised to continue applying for visas online as the new policy takes effect.
