President Tinubu on Wednesday formally swore in Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP) at a ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.
Disu took the oath of office at exactly 2:53 p.m., shortly after his citation was read by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr Abiodun Oladunjoye. President Tinubu had arrived at the venue at 2:48 p.m., with proceedings commencing after the rendition of the National Anthem.
The ceremony was witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelAmong top officials in attendance were Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Tunji Olaopa; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Esther Walson-Jack.
Disu’s confirmation as substantive IGP followed the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council earlier in the week, cementing his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

Shortly after taking the oath of office, the new IGP inaugurated an eight-member committee to drive the implementation framework for state policing in Nigeria, signalling the force’s readiness to engage in ongoing security sector reforms.
Addressing concerns over the proposed decentralisation of policing, Disu declared that state police “has come to stay,” emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force would play an active role in shaping its success.
“From the angle of the Nigerian police, we don’t want it to seem as if others are taking decisions and we, the most important people concerned, didn’t do anything,” he said. “We want to ensure that the best thing is done. The police should be able to contribute and do their own part in making it succeed. The police are not afraid. Our jobs are not being taken; it’s just an issue of partnership.”
He noted that the implementation committee would develop operational guidelines, coordination mechanisms between federal and state commands, recruitment and training standards, as well as accountability structures to ensure professionalism and respect for human rights.
The swearing-in marks a significant moment for Nigeria’s security architecture, as debates over state police intensify amid persistent security challenges across the country.
