Stop 2027 Politics, Fix Nigeria’s Crises Now, HURIWA Tells Keyamo, Ministers

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and other federal cabinet members against engaging in premature 2027 election politics, urging them instead to focus on addressing Nigeria’s deepening economic and social crises.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the rights advocacy group described as “insensitive and diversionary” Keyamo’s lengthy political commentary on his X handle, in which he speculated on the opposition Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) chances in the 2027 presidential election.

HURIWA said it was disturbing that a sitting minister charged with managing Nigeria’s struggling aviation sector could devote time to political analysis while citizens battle economic hardship and collapsing public infrastructure.

“Nigerians entrusted him with the aviation sector, which is already struggling with exorbitant airfares, poor airport infrastructure, and lack of investment. Yet, instead of rolling out workable reforms, he is busy warning the PDP about their choice of candidates for 2027. This is an unmitigated disgrace and President Tinubu must not condone it,” the group stated.

The association urged President Bola Tinubu to call his cabinet to order, stressing that ministers were appointed to revive the economy, not to act as political strategists for the ruling party. It accused officials of neglecting core responsibilities and worsening the plight of citizens through “toxic taxation policies” and poor policy implementation.

According to HURIWA, Nigerians are burdened by incessant increases in service fees, from international passports to business registration, alongside punitive lending practices by commercial banks with interest rates ranging from 25 to 30 percent. These, the group argued, have crippled small and medium-scale enterprises, stifled innovation, and forced many youths out of the country.

The group condemned what it called deliberate economic sabotage against young people, describing government policies as obstacles to entrepreneurship and job creation.

HURIWA further lamented that two years into Tinubu’s administration, Nigerians face worsening inflation, insecurity, and a crumbling public service system despite promises of renewed hope.

The group insisted that cabinet ministers must redirect their attention to governance, warning that history would judge the administration harshly if it squandered its mandate on politicking.

“Face your jobs, deliver the dividends of democracy, or quit your offices. Nigeria is not a testing ground for politicians to rehearse future elections. The mandate you carry belongs to the people, not to your political ambitions. Enough is enough,” HURIWA said.

By stressing the link between reckless politicking and Nigeria’s worsening economic despair, HURIWA underscored that the stakes are not about 2027 but about survival today.

For millions of citizens battling inflation, unemployment, and crumbling services, the group warned, every day wasted on political calculations is another day of deepening hardship.
