The incident occurred on Monday during a burial ceremony, when a masquerade, identified by locals as “Agaba”, reportedly attacked residents, celebrants, and passersby.

Videos circulating online showed the masquerade destroying public address systems, chasing smaller masquerades, and pushing down motorcyclists including an elderly man who hit his head on a parked car, raising fears of serious injury or death.

Agaba, described by residents as “famed and fiery,” typically appears only after 6pm due to its history of destructive behavior. The attacks sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for the masquerade and its attendants to be restrained, and for Governor Chukwuma Soludo to sanction those responsible.

While debates continue online over cultural norms versus public safety, the police intervention marks a clear signal that unlawful actions, even under the guise of tradition, will not be tolerated.

Authorities have urged the Awgbu community to cooperate with law enforcement to prevent future breaches of public peace.
