Nigeria’s national power grid operator has responded to growing public frustration over electricity supply by pointing to a new all-time peak in power generation under the current administration, even as official figures show that the improvement amounts to just 0.24 megawatts over four years.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Friday, the grid operator acknowledged widespread dissatisfaction in the power sector and appealed for patience, noting that President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” administration still has “over one year and six months left” to deliver on its power sector promises.
The grid disclosed that the previous all-time peak generation in Nigeria was 5,801.60 megawatts, achieved in 2021. It said this record was marginally surpassed on March 4, 2025, when power generation reached 5,801.84 megawatts.

A closer look at the figures, however, shows that the increase in peak generation between 2021 and March 2025 stands at just 0.24 megawatts, a difference widely viewed by energy experts and consumers as statistically insignificant in relation to Nigeria’s power needs.
Despite the new record, electricity supply across the country remains unstable, with frequent outages and grid disturbances continuing to affect households and businesses. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to question how such a minimal increase could be presented as a major achievement, given the scale of the nation’s electricity deficit.
The federal government has consistently attributed the sector’s challenges to long-standing issues such as poor infrastructure, gas supply constraints, vandalism and underinvestment, while maintaining that ongoing reforms will eventually translate into improved and more reliable power supply.
For many Nigerians, however, the grid’s latest disclosure has sharpened scrutiny of official claims, highlighting the stark contrast between modest gains on paper and the daily reality of unreliable electricity.
