October 20, 2025

Major roads in Abuja are currently gridlocked as the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest causes severe traffic disruptions across the city centre.

Security forces have deployed in force to disperse demonstrators at the Unity Fountain and nearby areas, firing tear gas and reportedly live rounds into the air. Several protesters, including bystanders, were arrested as authorities attempted to clear the roads.

The crackdown has led to massive traffic congestion, with vehicles stranded along Shehu Shagari Way, Aso Drive, Maitama, and Airport Road, as police barricades and checkpoints block access to the city centre. Commuters are abandoning vehicles, while others are being forced to seek alternative routes.

Sowore Relocates Amid Disruption

Organiser Omoyele Sowore, who had earlier addressed the protesters, has moved to an undisclosed location following reports that the demonstration had been violently disrupted.

Eyewitnesses report that chaos erupted as protesters fled from tear gas and police attempts to disperse the crowd, with some seeking shelter in nearby streets and buildings.

The situation remains tense, with gridlock continuing across central Abuja and a heavy security presence at major intersections.
