With less than 72 hours left for Euracare Multi‑Specialist Hospital, Lagos, to respond, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, are pressing forward in a high-profile legal confrontation over the death of their 21‑month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi Adichie‑Esege, on 7 January 2026.
Through their solicitors led by Professor Kemi Pinheiro, SAN, the couple served Euracare with a legal notice on 10 January, giving the hospital seven days to comply with multiple demands related to their child’s care and the circumstances surrounding his death.

The notice explicitly demands:
- Certified copies of all medical records relating to the child, including admission and procedural notes, anaesthetic charts, ICU reports, and consent forms.
- Identification of all medical staff involved in the child’s care, from doctors to nurses.
- Preservation of all evidence, both physical and digital, including CCTV footage, monitoring data, pharmacy records, communications logs, and equipment use records.
The notice warns that tampering or destruction of evidence will be treated as obstruction of justice.
The legal notice highlights that the child underwent procedures including echocardiogram, MRI, lumbar puncture, and PICC line insertion, with sedation administered using propofol. It alleges that complications arose while the child was being moved between hospital areas, raising questions about dosing, airway management, supplemental oxygen, and monitoring during sedation matters the notice describes as potential breaches of duty of care.
Euracare has denied allegations of negligence, stating that the child arrived at the hospital in a critically ill condition and that medical staff adhered to accepted clinical standards.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, has ordered an official investigation into the circumstances of the child’s death, directing regulatory bodies to examine compliance with patient-safety protocols.
With the deadline for compliance looming, all eyes are now on Euracare, as the coming days could determine whether the hospital fully cooperates with Adichie’s solicitors or faces potential legal escalation.
