Amnesty International Condemns Trial, Detention of Senator Ugwuanyi

March 6, 2026

Global rights organisation Amnesty International has strongly condemned the trial and detention of Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, describing the charges against the senator as baseless and a threat to freedom of expression, Prime Business Africa reports.

Ugwuanyi was remanded in prison in Enugu on Tuesday after appearing before a Magistrate Court over allegations of cyberbullying and defamation.

According to the Nigeria Police Force in Enugu State, the charges stem from a message the senator allegedly posted on his Facebook page which authorities said targeted the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia.

Reacting to the development, Amnesty International described the prosecution as a “sham trial based on bogus charges,” arguing that it reflects intolerance for dissenting views.

The organisation said the case represents a disregard for the rule of law and warned that no individual should face punishment for criticising a government official.

Amnesty International further noted that under international human rights law, criticism of public officials including those occupying the highest political offices is protected as part of freedom of expression and political opposition.

“The mere fact that a social media post is considered unpalatable by a state government official or any public figure is not sufficient to justify prosecution,” the group said, urging the police to uphold due process and avoid actions that could undermine citizens’ rights.

The rights organisation also used the opportunity to raise broader concerns about alleged human rights abuses within the Nigerian policing system.

It cited allegations surrounding a police unit known as “Tiger Base,” located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State. According to Amnesty International, the unit originally established to tackle kidnapping and armed robbery has increasingly been used to arrest and detain individuals over personal or political disputes, including land and family conflicts.

The organisation said former detainees reported being held in filthy, windowless cells and subjected to beatings, while some suspects were allegedly detained for weeks or months without formal charges.

It further claimed that detainees were forced to sign incriminating statements under torture, including severe beatings with iron rods and cables, as well as other forms of physical abuse intended to extract confessions.

Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the allegations and ensure that law enforcement agencies respect human rights and uphold the rule of law.
