Aba Lawmaker Hon. Alex Mascot Joins Labour Party, Signals Political Shake-Up in Abia

March 4, 2026

In a significant political move, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, the Member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, has formally defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Labour Party.

The lawmaker, popularly known as “Onyeocha N’Aba,” submitted his resignation to APGA’s local leadership with immediate effect, before officially joining the Labour Party. His defection was publicly acknowledged on March 3, 2026, when he was received at the Government House in Umuahia by Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

Political analysts describe the shift as a strategic boost for the Labour Party in Abia State, particularly in Aba, a commercial hub where Hon. Ikwechegh enjoys substantial grassroots support. Observers believe his move could influence local political dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.

While official reasons for his departure from APGA remain largely undisclosed, sources indicate that the lawmaker had been considering a switch for some time, with speculation intensifying in recent weeks prior to his formal announcement.

The Labour Party has welcomed Ikwechegh’s defection as a reinforcement of its growing presence in the state. Further statements from both the lawmaker and party officials are expected in the coming days, as political watchers monitor the potential implications for Abia’s electoral landscape.
