Amanze ChinonyeNigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, delivered a stern admonition at the official launch of Enugu Air on Monday, emphasizing discipline, professionalism, and sustainability.
Speaking at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Keyamo cautioned against politics and favoritism in the airline’s operations. “Run it professionally. Don’t give free tickets to your friends,” he stated firmly. “If you want it to survive, support the airline.” He emphasised the need for all passengers to maintain punctuality at all times, saying: “If the governor is two minutes late, close the door and take off.” he said there should be no exemptions, insisting that operational standards must be upheld regardless of one’s status.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe minister also urged the Enugu State Government to insulate the airline from bureaucratic bottlenecks and political interference. Warning against a repeat of the demise of Nigerian Airways, he said such ventures must be managed with corporate integrity and independence.
Despite political differences, Keyamo praised Governor Peter Mbah’s development agenda. “You’re in PDP, but we’re scared of you,” he quipped, borrowing President Tinubu’s words: “You have a progressive spirit. You’re one of the best‑performing governors” .
In his remarks, Governor Mbah, reflected on his vision for regional transformation. He said the airline is a cornerstone of his broader development strategy. “Enugu Air is a critical part of my administration’s vision for a modern, integrated transportation network that can drive economic growth and regional connectivity,” he said.

Mbah further highlighted the airline’s role in positioning Enugu as a major aviation hub, contributing to boosting trade, tourism, and business across the southeast and beyond.
Keyamo confirmed that Enugu Air will launch with three Embraer E170 and E190 jets, operating an initial “golden triangle” route between Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos, with plans to extend to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other cities. The minister reiterated the need for innovation and sustainability to rise to global air‑travel standards and maintain state pride.
As Enugu Air takes off, its success will depend on strict discipline, political neutrality, and operational excellence. If managed well, it could signal a new chapter for domestic aviation and regional development in Nigeria.
