Conflicting Reports Emerge Over Fate of Iran’s Supreme Leader After U.S.-Israeli Strikes

February 28, 2026

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, is expected to address the nation “within minutes,” Iran’s state-linked Al-Alam TV reported Saturday, hours after coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel targeted key Iranian figures and strategic installations.

The announcement came amid mounting speculation over Khamenei’s fate following the strikes. Unconfirmed reports circulating in regional and international media earlier suggested that the 86-year-old cleric may have been killed in the Israeli bombardment.

However, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, told NBC News in an interview that both Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are alive.

Conflicting Signals Amid Escalation

The coordinated U.S.-Israeli strikes reportedly targeted high-value military, intelligence and nuclear-related sites across Iran, marking one of the most significant escalations between Tehran and its adversaries in recent years.

While Israeli officials have not publicly confirmed whether Khamenei himself was a direct target, satellite imagery and local reports indicated heavy damage in areas associated with senior leadership compounds in Tehran. Iranian authorities have yet to provide detailed information on casualties among top officials.

The conflicting narratives with state television announcing an imminent address while other reports speculate about the supreme leader’s death have heightened uncertainty at a volatile moment in the region.

Official Denial From Tehran

In his interview with NBC News, Araghchi dismissed reports of Khamenei’s death and insisted that both the supreme leader and President Pezeshkian remain alive despite the strikes.

Iran has vowed retaliation for the attacks, describing them as acts of aggression and violations of its sovereignty. Military officials said retaliatory options were under consideration, while air defenses in both Iran and Israel remained on high alert.

As of press time, Khamenei had not yet appeared publicly, and no verified visual confirmation of his condition had been released. Observers say his anticipated address if delivered would serve as the clearest indication yet of the leadership’s stability following the strikes.

With tensions soaring and information evolving rapidly, the situation remains fluid, raising fears of broader regional confrontation.
