Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has raised fresh concerns over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process, asserting that election outcomes are not completely decided by the electorate, Prime Business Africa reports.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time political programme, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives said that while Nigerians turn out to vote, the final results often fail to reflect the true will of the people. According to Tambuwal, manipulations during collation and result transmission are among the key factors undermining the integrity of elections.
“People vote, but what is declared at the end does not always correspond with what the voters actually cast at polling units,” he said, highlighting systemic weaknesses that politicians and officials can exploit.

Tambuwal also addressed internal party dynamics, stressing that whichever candidate emerges from the ADC coalition, all members would offer support. He rejected claims that the party would falter without a particular figure, emphasizing that the key requirement is a credible and transparent process.
On the sensitive issue of zoning, Tambuwal argued that competence must take precedence over sentiment. “If your mother is critically ill, will you ask for a doctor from your tribe or the best doctor available? That is the situation Nigeria is in today,” he said, underscoring the need for merit-based leadership in national governance.
Tambuwal did not shy away from security concerns, criticizing a recent US airstrike in parts of Sokoto State, calling it unjustified and based on faulty intelligence. He noted that the worst-hit areas of banditry, particularly in eastern Sokoto, were not targeted. Regarding notorious bandit kingpin Bello Turji, the senator said, “We should not negotiate with bandits from a weak position. We should subdue them first, then come to the table.”
On international engagement, Tambuwal welcomed scrutiny of Nigeria’s elections, noting its influence on the 2015 polls. He encouraged similar oversight to help ensure that future elections are free, fair, and credible, without direct interference.
Reflecting on his political journey, Tambuwal described his core motivation as public service. “What I want history to say is that I was selfless, that I invested in human capital development and shaped the youth towards a better future. My fear is to be judged otherwise,” he said.
Tambuwal’s statements, comes amid growing national debates over electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say his remarks add weight to calls for electoral reforms, stronger governance, and merit-based leadership as Nigeria faces political, security, and developmental challenges.
