Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that no aspirant will step down in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential race, emphasizing that all contenders will compete freely in the party’s primaries ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Atiku, speaking through his media aide Paul Ibe, described the ADC as being on a “national rescue mission”, with himself and other committed patriots central to the effort. He warned that any attempts to influence or undermine the party especially following Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party to the ADC on December 31, 2025, in Enugu would fail.
He specifically noted that open boasts by a serving minister and presidential aides about plans to sabotage the party reveal their fear of the ADC’s growing influence.

“Let there be no ambiguity: the ADC is determined to end the misfortune imposed by the Tinubu-led APC. No amount of intimidation, intrigue, or sabotage will derail this rescue mission. Nigeria will not surrender its democracy without a fight,” Atiku emphasised.
ADC leaders, including former Minister Bolaji Abdullahi and media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, have reiterated the party’s commitment to transparent primaries. While consensus remains the preferred route for selecting the flagbearer, the party has confirmed that primaries will proceed if an agreement cannot be reached.
Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, has also affirmed his intent to contest, insisting that the decision should be left to party members and that he will not step aside for any aspirant. Analysts note that the ADC’s rising profile as a coalition platform for aggrieved politicians from multiple parties adds complexity to the race, especially amid discussions around zoning and regional balance.
