Jordan Expresses Concern as Pakistan–Afghanistan Border Clashes Escalate

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has expressed concern over the escalating border clashes between the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, warning that the fighting has resulted in casualties and displacement, while raising fears of broader regional instability.

The clashes have intensified sharply over the past 72 hours, following days of cross-border exchanges. Pakistani forces launched airstrikes targeting more than 100 locations inside Afghan territory, including military posts and alleged militant hideouts.

Islamabad said the strikes were aimed at groups such as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which it accuses the Afghan Taliban administration of sheltering. Pakistan claims its operations killed more than 300 Afghan fighters and wounded hundreds more. Afghan authorities, however, have disputed those figures, insisting that their forces inflicted significant casualties on Pakistani troops during retaliatory attacks along the frontier.

‘Open War’ and Expanding Hostilities

In a dramatic escalation, Pakistan’s defence minister described the situation as an “open war,” marking one of the most serious confrontations between the two neighbours in recent years.

Heavy exchanges have been reported along multiple sectors of the rugged Durand Line border. Afghan officials said retaliatory strikes targeted Pakistani military installations and border posts, while also reporting civilian casualties inside Afghan territory.

Explosions were reported in parts of Kabul and other Afghan cities, with both sides accusing each other of initiating the latest round of hostilities. Independent verification of competing casualty claims has not been possible.

Humanitarian Impact and Displacement

The clashes have triggered displacement in border communities, particularly around key crossing points such as Torkham. Thousands of civilians have reportedly fled their homes as artillery and airstrikes intensified, compounding an already fragile humanitarian situation. Civilian infrastructure has been affected, raising concerns among aid agencies about access to vulnerable populations.

Jordan’s Call for Diplomacy

In a press release issued Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said it is closely monitoring the situation and reaffirmed Jordan’s support for diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.

The ministry’s spokesperson, Fuad Al-Majali, stressed the importance of exercising restraint, prioritising dialogue, and respecting state sovereignty. He underscored that adherence to the principles of good neighbourliness is essential to consolidating security and stability in the region.

International Response

The international community has urged both Islamabad and Kabul to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic channels. Russia has publicly called on both sides to resume negotiations, while several regional actors, including Saudi Arabia, have engaged in diplomatic outreach aimed at reducing tensions.

Analysts warn that continued military exchanges risk further destabilising an already volatile region, with prolonged escalation potentially having far-reaching security consequences for South and Central Asia
