Israel Launches Daylight Strike on Tehran as U.S. Joins Operation Amid Nuclear Tensions

February 28, 2026

Israel launched a daylight military strike on Iran’s capital, Tehran, on Saturday, targeting what officials described as military and government-linked sites, as tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme reached a boiling point.

Plumes of smoke were seen rising from central Tehran after the first apparent explosion struck near the offices of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. It was not immediately clear whether the 86-year-old cleric was present at the compound at the time of the attack. He has not been seen publicly in recent days amid escalating tensions.

Iranian state media reported strikes across multiple parts of the country, while authorities shut down airspace and mobile phone services as explosions continued to reverberate across the capital. Roads leading to Khamenei’s compound were sealed off by security forces. No official casualty figures were immediately released.

U.S. Participation

The joint operation comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has been pressing for a renewed agreement to constrain Iran’s nuclear programme. Washington has assembled a significant deployment of fighter jets and warships across the Middle East in recent weeks in a bid to pressure Tehran into negotiations.

Iran maintains it has the right to enrich uranium and has resisted expanding talks to include its long-range missile programme or its backing of armed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Israel Activates Nationwide Emergency Measures

In Israel, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed it had launched what Defence Minister Israel Katz described as an operation “to remove threats.” He did not elaborate on specific targets but officials briefed on the campaign said it included Iranian military installations, intelligence sites and symbolic government locations.

As the strikes began, the IDF’s Home Front Command issued a nationwide alert instructing civilians to remain close to bomb shelters. Air-raid sirens sounded across Israel, and the country’s airspace was temporarily closed.

The military said the alert was a “proactive” measure to prepare the public for the possibility of missile launches toward Israeli territory. Hospitals across Israel activated emergency protocols, including moving patients and scheduled surgeries to underground facilities.

Risk of Retaliation

Iran has previously warned that American military personnel and bases across the region would be targeted in the event of an attack. It was not immediately clear whether Tehran would respond militarily in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s strikes.

The operation marks one of the most direct and significant escalations between Israel and Iran in recent years, raising fears of a broader regional conflict as diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear programme appear increasingly fragile.

The situation remains fluid, with both countries on heightened alert and the international community closely monitoring developments.
