Amanze Chinonye
The United States Government has commended the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) for its preparedness ahead of the delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters, citing the readiness of designated facilities and support structures to receive and operationalise the platforms, Prime Business Africa reports.
The commendation followed a three-day high-level engagement in Abuja between a U.S. delegation from PMA-276 and senior NAF officials. The discussions centred on integration timelines, logistics architecture, sustainment frameworks and operational activation plans for the incoming fleet.
Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed in a statement that the meeting focused on a comprehensive programme and support plan designed to ensure seamless integration, sustainment and operational effectiveness of the helicopters upon delivery.

Abdullahi reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to aligning all operational, technical and logistical requirements to guarantee immediate operational readiness once the aircraft are inducted into service.

The AH-1Z Viper, currently operated by the United States Marine Corps, is an advanced twin-engine attack helicopter equipped with modern targeting systems, upgraded avionics and precision-guided weapons capability designed for close air support, anti-armour and expeditionary missions.
Nigeria’s acquisition of the aircraft was approved under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales framework, with aerospace manufacturer Bell Textron contracted to produce and deliver the helicopters along with associated training and logistics support.
According to the NAF statement, the engagement underscores the steady advancement of Nigeria–United States defence cooperation, anchored on mutual trust, shared security objectives and institutional professionalism. It added that the commendation reflects international recognition of the Air Force’s meticulous planning, strategic foresight and disciplined modernisation drive under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff.
Beyond fleet acquisition, the collaboration is expected to significantly strengthen Nigeria’s airpower capability, reinforce the national security architecture and contribute to broader national stability and sustainable development.
