Stripe Explores Possible Deal for PayPal as Takeover Speculation Lifts Shares

February 24, 2026

Financial technology company Stripe is exploring a potential acquisition of PayPal or parts of its operations, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday.

The report said Stripe has conveyed early-stage interest in a transaction involving the digital payments firm, though deliberations remain preliminary and may not result in a formal offer. Both companies declined to comment, and Reuters said it was unable to independently confirm the report.

Investor Reaction and Valuations

The market responded swiftly to the takeover speculation. PayPal shares ended the trading session nearly 7% higher, pushing the company’s market capitalization above $40 billion, according to LSEG data.

Stripe, which remains privately held, was valued at $159 billion in a tender offer for employees and shareholders completed Tuesday. The San Francisco–based firm provides payments infrastructure that enables businesses to process transactions, handle payouts and streamline financial workflows.

A deal of this scale would mark one of the most significant consolidation moves in the digital payments industry, combining two major players with global footprints.

Leadership Upheaval and Slowing Growth

The reported interest comes during a period of transition for PayPal. Earlier this month, the company removed CEO Alex Chriss, who had been appointed to steer the business through slowing expansion and intensifying competition. The board said progress on strategic transformation and execution had not met expectations after PayPal issued a 2026 profit outlook that fell well short of Wall Street forecasts.

Chair Enrique Lores was subsequently named president and chief executive as the company seeks to reset its growth trajectory.

PayPal has cited weaker retail spending as an additional headwind, noting that elevated interest rates, persistent cost-of-living pressures and early signs of labor market softening have curbed discretionary consumer purchases.

Competitive Landscape

Once a dominant force in online payments, PayPal has faced mounting competition from technology giants such as Apple and Google, both of which have expanded aggressively into digital wallets and payment services.

Although the company experienced rapid growth during the pandemic-driven surge in e-commerce, momentum has since cooled. Despite a multi-year turnaround strategy, PayPal has struggled to recapture the pace of expansion that once defined its business.

While industry observers caution that exploratory discussions do not guarantee a transaction, the reported interest from Stripe underscores the shifting dynamics in the global payments sector and the potential for further consolidation.
