Sowore Confronts Minister Umahi Over Woman’s Arrest in Abuja Debt Dispute

February 25, 2026

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, confronted Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, at the FCT Police Command in Abuja over the alleged illegal arrest of a woman in a longstanding debt dispute, Prime Business Africa reports.

Sowore, in a video shared on his social media handles, accused Umahi of using the police to intimidate a private citizen and settle personal scores. The woman, identified as TracyNither Nicolas Ohiri, reportedly claims that Umahi owes her N250 million for promotional services rendered over 12 years ago during his gubernatorial campaign in Ebonyi State.

Ohiri, a married woman, was arrested in Lagos on allegations of “cyberbullying” after posting a video appeal online and was subsequently flown to Abuja, where she was detained. Sowore said the matter is fundamentally civil in nature, relating to an alleged unpaid debt, but the police allegedly escalated it into a criminal case.

According to Sowore, Umahi was brought to the FCT Police Command to confront and intimidate Ohiri. “He was effectively set up to harass her inside a police facility,” Sowore stated. He added that after his arrival, the police immediately dismantled the meeting, and Umahi left the command visibly angry.

Despite the confrontation, Ohiri remains in custody, and police have refused to grant her bail. Sowore alleged that Umahi threatened her on his way out, saying she “has not seen anything yet.” No official statement has been released by the police or the Minister of Works regarding the incident.

The case raises questions over the use of law enforcement in civil disputes and the alleged abuse of power by public officials, highlighting ongoing concerns about citizens’ rights and police conduct in Nigeria.
