In a bid to boost financial literacy among young Nigerians, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education and Core International, has announced the launch of a nationwide capital market quiz competition for secondary schools.
The initiative, titled “Nigerian Capital Market – Secondary Schools Quiz Competition,” is designed to equip students with foundational knowledge in finance, investment, and economic development.

According to the organisers, a total of 370 schools, 10 from each of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), will participate in the academic tournament. The competition will unfold in three stages: state-level preliminaries, zonal semi-finals, and a national grand finale.
The programme aims to foster academic excellence, teamwork, and national inclusivity, with both public and private schools represented. It will be hosted on the Financial Markets Indaba platform, a sister organisation of Core International with a track record in financial education and civic engagement.

Beyond the competition itself, the initiative includes a capacity-building workshop for teachers to support student preparation and facilitate the long-term integration of financial literacy into school curricula.
In a move to offer students hands-on experience with investment concepts, participants will also gain access to a Virtual Trading Platform that simulates real-time stock trading using data from the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX). Organisers say this will give students practical insight into savings, investment strategies, and stock market dynamics in a risk-free environment.
Under the theme “Empowering Future Investors through Knowledge,” the programme supports the SEC’s broader mandate of investor protection and capital market development. Officials say the initiative is intended to nurture a financially literate generation that can drive inclusive economic growth and support a more resilient capital market.
The competition will be overseen by representatives from partnering institutions to ensure content quality, alignment with national education standards, and fairness in judging.
Prizes, national recognition, and future learning opportunities will be awarded to top-performing schools and students at the grand finale, which will conclude the programme in early 2026.
