Ogun 2027: Female APC Chieftain Declares Governorship Bid, Vows Continuity, Institutional Balance

February 26, 2026

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State has formally declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election, pledging to prioritise continuity, party cohesion and balanced development if elected.

In a notice addressed to party leaders, members and stakeholders, the aspirant said her decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultation,” adding that she deliberately chose a public declaration “focused on responsibility rather than spectacle.”

She said the 2027 election cycle presents unusual political risks that require what she described as steady leadership and institutional stability.

Pledges Continuity, Respect for Party Leadership

The aspirant acknowledged her previous attempt to secure the APC governorship ticket in 2022, noting that although she did not emerge as candidate, she accepted the outcome and maintained party unity.

She stated that her renewed ambition was not driven by unfinished business but by what she described as a changing political environment ahead of 2027.

Addressing concerns about her relationship with the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, she said she maintains a cordial and respectful relationship with him and other former leaders of the state.

“This is not a candidacy designed to undermine any of our leaders or rewrite the past,” she said, adding that her goal is to “protect what works and improve what must be improved without rupture.”

Speaks on Ogun West Agitation, Zoning Debate

On the agitation for power shift to Ogun West, the aspirant described the concerns as real but cautioned against what she termed “moral absolutism” in handling zoning debates.

She warned that unmanaged grievances could destabilise the state and urged party leaders to pursue inclusion without escalation.

“Our task is not to choose sides emotionally; it is to prevent a scenario where zoning becomes a blunt instrument that destabilises the entire state,” she stated.

Raises Concerns Over Populism, Governance Stability

The governorship hopeful also cautioned against what she described as “loud politics,” warning that populist movements can mobilise quickly but collapse just as fast, leaving governance challenges behind.

She said her focus extends beyond winning elections to ensuring governability, investor confidence and sustained public trust.

“Ogun State has always rewarded moderation, balance and institutional respect,” she said, adding that politics should not become “theatre at the expense of governance.”

Addresses Gender Dimension

The aspirant acknowledged that her bid carries a gender dimension, noting that Nigeria has yet to elect a female governor.

While recognising the symbolic weight of her ambition, she emphasised that her campaign would be anchored on competence rather than identity politics.

“It is not about symbolism. It is about capacity and competence,” she said, adding that her aspiration could help pave the way for future women leaders in Ogun State and across Nigeria.

The declaration signals the early shaping of the 2027 governorship contest within the APC in Ogun State, with internal consultations and zoning debates expected to intensify in the coming months.
