NIMC, Police Crack Down on Illegal NIN Centres, Data Phishing Syndicates

August 29, 2025

The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has commended the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the Nigeria Cybercrime Centre (NCCC) for their support in tackling illegal activities linked to the National Identification Number (NIN).

Speaking at a joint press conference at the NCCC headquarters in Abuja, Coker-Odusote disclosed that security operatives recently raided several unauthorized NIN centres in Kano, Oyo, Lagos, Enugu, and Akwa Ibom. The operations led to arrests, the seizure of fraudulent enrolment devices, and the dismantling of fake registration networks.

The NCCC also announced the shutdown of 13 phishing websites unlawfully harvesting personal data from Nigerians. Several suspects were apprehended during the coordinated operation and will be charged to court in the coming days.

Coker-Odusote expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies for their support in safeguarding Nigeria’s identity management system.

“These strides demonstrate the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ data and maintaining the integrity of the NIN process,” she said.

The NIN, which has become mandatory for access to banking, telecommunications, and government services, is now one of the most targeted identity documents in the country.

With cybercriminals increasingly exploiting Nigerians’ desperation to obtain NINs, the crackdown is seen as both a relief and a wake-up call. Authorities are urging citizens to avoid unofficial enrolment centres and ensure their data is only captured through accredited channels.

The raids form part of a broader strategy to preserve the credibility of Nigeria’s digital identity system and curb cyber-enabled crimes.
