Kanu Transferred to Sokoto Prison After Life Sentence

November 21, 2025

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has reportedly been moved from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention in Abuja to a correctional facility in Sokoto.

The information was disclosed by Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. Ejimakor wrote:

“MAZI NNAMDI KANU has just been moved from DSS Abuja to the correctional facility (prison) in Sokoto; so far away from his lawyers, family, loved ones, and well-wishers.”

The transfer comes in the wake of Kanu’s recent sentencing to life imprisonment by a Federal High Court on terrorism-related charges. While the move has been confirmed by his legal team, there has been no official statement from the DSS regarding the transfer.

Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment, convicting Kanu on multiple terrorism-related charges. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, bringing an end to his years-long detention at the DSS facility in Abuja.

Ejimakor reiterated that the move places Kanu far from his lawyers, family, and supporters.
