Influencer Denies Rumours Linking Her to El Mencho Tip-Off as Authorities Withhold Informant’s Identity

February 26, 2026

An online storm linking a Mexican sports influencer to the military operation that killed alleged cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, has intensified, despite the absence of official confirmation supporting the claims.

El Mencho, head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed during an operation by the Mexican Army, according to multiple international reports.

In coverage published by Hindustan Times, Mexico’s Defence Minister, Ricardo Trevilla, said intelligence linked to a confidante of one of Oseguera Cervantes’ romantic partners was instrumental in locating him.

Authorities indicated that the woman had been taken to Tapalpa described as a scenic village known for vacation homes by one of the cartel leader’s associates. She reportedly met with him and left shortly before the military launched its operation the following day.

Officials have not publicly identified the woman involved.

Social Media Speculation

Following the announcement, speculation surged online, with several unverified social media accounts naming sports influencer Maria Julissa as the alleged romantic partner who provided the tip-off.

Posts circulating on X and other platforms alleged that she had exposed El Mencho’s location. Some went further, claiming that the CJNG had placed a $1.5 million bounty on her and that she had been handed over by a relative linked to another cartel.

However, there is no confirmation from Mexican authorities or credible news organisations that such a bounty exists or that the influencer has any connection to the case.

Public Denial

Maria Julissa has publicly rejected the allegations.

In a statement posted on Instagram, she described the reports as “false and unfounded,” urging users not to share unverified content and warning that misinformation “can cause a lot of harm.” Her response was subsequently reported by regional media outlets.

According to published profiles, Julissa is originally from Hermosillo, Sonora, and produces sports, lifestyle and travel content. She reportedly resides in Cali, Colombia, and is engaged to streamer Stiven Tangarife, known online as Mr Stiven TC. She maintains a large social media following across Instagram and YouTube.

She has stated she has “no relation” to Oseguera Cervantes.

Official Silence on Identity

While Mexican officials have confirmed that information connected to a romantic associate played a role in the operation, they have not disclosed the identity of the individual involved.

Security observers note that major cartel developments frequently trigger waves of misinformation online, including false identifications and fabricated retaliation narratives.

As of press time, there is no verified evidence supporting claims of a bounty, cartel reprisal against the influencer, or her alleged capture. Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the source whose information led to the CJNG leader’s location.
