By-elections Across Nigeria: ADC Tests Popularity As Security Concerns Mount In Kaduna, Anambra

August 16, 2025

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is aiming to consolidate its national presence as 17 political parties and 637 candidates vie for 68 legislative seats in the ongoing nationwide by-elections, with the party focused on securing votes and positions across the country.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that the polls will fill vacant positions in state assemblies and the National Assembly following resignations, deaths, and tribunal nullifications. Analysts say the results will not only influence the balance of power in several legislatures but also gauge the strength of smaller parties like the ADC against the dominant APC and PDP.

Security Measures in Anambra

In Anambra, particularly Onitsha and Nnewi, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) deployed 800 personnel to safeguard polling units and election materials. Assistant Inspector General of Police Godwin Eze assumed operational command, enforcing movement restrictions and barring unauthorized security outfits. Multilayered security, including patrols and checkpoints, was implemented to protect voters, election staff, and sensitive materials.

Political Tensions and Security Concerns in Kaduna

In Kaduna State, heightened political tensions erupted in Zaria when youths booed and disrupted a rally led by Governor Uba Sani and Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. Authorities responded by imposing movement restrictions in four local government areas Sabon Gari, Zaria, Chikun, and Kajuru to ensure a peaceful electoral process. Security agencies also foiled an alleged vote-buying attempt, apprehending a suspect with N25.9 million intended to influence voters.

Kaduna State Police and INEC officials assured residents that measures are in place to protect lives and uphold the integrity of the by-elections, emphasizing that only individuals with essential duties will be allowed movement in restricted areas.

Stakes for the ADC

The ADC has positioned these by-elections as a litmus test for its national appeal and grassroots acceptance. Observers say that performance in these contests, alongside the ability to navigate security challenges, will determine the party’s relevance ahead of future general elections.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu urged voters to participate freely while ensuring compliance with security directives, stressing that agencies were working together to maintain order and transparency.

With 68 seats and hundreds of candidates in the race, the by-elections are more than a contest for local representation. They serve as a critical test of Nigeria’s democratic processes, the ability of security agencies to safeguard elections, and the electorate’s confidence in political institutions. How parties like the ADC perform, and how effectively authorities manage tensions and ensure fair play, will have implications for political stability, voter trust, and the nation’s readiness for future general elections.
