Adamawa Governor Fintiri Swaps PDP for APC in Strategic Realignment

February 27, 2026

In a landmark political development, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), signalling a major shift in the state’s political landscape, Prime Business Africa reports.

In a statewide broadcast on Friday, Fintiri said his cabinet and members of the PDP have moved with him to the APC, describing the decision as a strategic move to promote the developmental interests of Adamawa State and ensure closer collaboration with the federal government on ongoing and planned initiatives.

The defection leaves the PDP with only three governors nationwide, marking a significant weakening of the party’s influence at the sub-national level. Several lawmakers from the Adamawa State House of Assembly, including principal officers, had already resigned from the PDP in the days leading up to Fintiri’s announcement, signalling a coordinated realignment.

The APC welcomed Fintiri’s defection, pledging full support for his administration and praising the move as a boost to the party’s position both in Adamawa and nationally. Political analysts say Fintiri’s exit represents a major setback for the PDP in the North-East and could reshape local legislative and grassroots dynamics, while reflecting the broader trend of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

First elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 under the PDP platform, Fintiri had been a prominent figure for the party in the North-East. His administration has focused on infrastructure development, education, and social welfare programs, which he cited as reasons for aligning with the APC to enhance federal collaboration.

As at press time, the PDP had yet to issue an official response to the governor’s defection.
