Obi Praises Nigerians’ Support After Armed Attack on ADC Office in Benin

February 25, 2026

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi has expressed gratitude to Nigerians worldwide for their support after a violent attack at the All Democrats Congress (ADC) office in Benin City, Edo State, on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

The incident occurred shortly after Obi and other political figures attended an ADC event in the city, which included the induction of former Edo Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata into the party. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of suspected gunmen stormed the party office, firing shots and causing panic among attendees. The attackers reportedly followed some dignitaries, including former Edo State governors Chief John Odigie‑Oyegun and Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, to Oyegun’s residence, where vehicles were damaged and gunshots fired at the gate. No major casualties were confirmed.

The Edo State Police Command said it responded promptly to the disruption, describing the perpetrators as “suspected hoodlums” and confirming that investigations are ongoing. While the ADC alleged political motivation behind the attack, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) denied any involvement, attributing the violence to internal party tensions.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi thanked citizens for their prayers, calls, and solidarity, highlighting the difficult time faced by the families of Chief Oyegun and Professor Osunbor. “Your support has strengthened my faith in our shared humanity and our collective hope for a better Nigeria,” he said, adding that the experience reinforced his renewed commitment to serve and build the nation.

Recalling his earlier experiences with insecurity in Anambra State, Obi noted that lawlessness has long shaped his determination to seek leadership roles that restore order, security, and public trust. “The growing lawlessness across our country calls upon all men and women of goodwill to step forward not in fear but with a sense of responsibility,” he said, quoting Plato: “The price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.”

Obi urged Nigerians to elect leaders characterized by competence, character, commitment, and compassion those who prioritize service above power.

Obi concluded by calling on Nigerians to remain steadfast in pursuing accountable leadership and national unity. “Now is the time for courage, for service above self, and for a collective effort to build the peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria our people de serve.
