Euracare Denies Negligence as Probes Begin Over Death of Adichie’s Son

January 11, 2026

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence following the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, as professional bodies and the Lagos State Government launch investigations into the incident, Prime Business Africa reports.

In a statement issued by its management, On Sunday the Lagos-based hospital expressed sympathy to Adichie and her family, describing the loss of a child as “profound and unimaginable,” while insisting that some reports circulating about the case contain inaccuracies.

According to Euracare, the toddler was critically ill and was referred to its facility for specific diagnostic procedures after receiving treatment at two paediatric centres. The hospital said its medical team immediately commenced care in line with established clinical protocols and “internationally accepted medical standards,” including the administration of sedation where clinically indicated.

The hospital added that it worked collaboratively with external medical teams recommended by the family and provided all necessary clinical support. Despite what it described as concerted efforts, the child died less than 24 hours after presenting at the facility.

However, in a separate interview on Arise TV, Adichie’s sister-in-law, Dr. Anthea Nwandu, alleged that the hospital’s medical director admitted that the child was given an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol. She claimed the overdose led to brain injury and cardiac arrest shortly before the toddler’s death.

The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA), led by its President, Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, has since announced a formal investigation into the incident. The probe, according to the society, will verify the registration status of the personnel involved and assess whether standard anaesthetic protocols were followed.

The Lagos State Government has also waded into the matter. The state’s Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, reaffirmed the government’s “zero tolerance” policy for professional misconduct and confirmed that the state health regulatory authority has commenced an independent investigation.

Euracare said it has initiated a detailed internal review in line with its clinical governance standards and pledged full cooperation with all regulatory and professional bodies involved in the probes. The hospital also urged the public to respect the family’s privacy as clinical audits and investigations continue.

“Our priority remains compassion, patient safety, and the responsible handling of this matter, while allowing due process to take its course,” the statement said.
