FG Assures One-Week Delivery for Passports After Application

August 29, 2025

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that international passports will now be delivered within one week after application.

Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday, saying the reform is part of measures to end the delays and frustrations that have trailed passport issuance for years.

According to him, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has been directed to ensure applicants receive their passports within seven days of completing enrollment.

The pledge comes almost immediately after the NIS announced a 100 percent increase in passport application fees, raising the cost of a 32-page, five-year passport from ₦50,000 to ₦100,000, and a 64-page, ten-year passport from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000, effective September 1, 2025.

With the sharp rise in fees sparking outrage among citizens, the one-week delivery promise is seen as government’s attempt to justify the higher charges and reassure Nigerians of improved service. Whether this reform will match reality, however, remains to be seen, as scarcity of booklets and illegal charges by immigration officials have long frustrated applicants.
