The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of falsified batches of Postinor-2 (Levonorgestrel 0.75mg), a widely used emergency contraceptive pill.
In a statement, NAFDAC said the falsified products were detected following a report from the Society for Family Health (SFH), which confirmed that it did not import the flagged batches.

The pin verification sticker on the fake packs bears the misspelling “Veify” instead of “Verify”, while the back of the pack wrongly reads “Distnibuted in Nigeria” instead of “Distributed in Nigeria.”

NAFDAC warned that counterfeit versions of Postinor-2 may contain incorrect or harmful ingredients, unsafe dosages, or contaminants, posing serious risks such as contraceptive failure, unpredictable side effects, allergic reactions, organ damage, and possible long-term reproductive health complications.
The agency directed all its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and mop up the falsified products nationwide. Distributors, retailers, and healthcare professionals were also urged to remain vigilant and ensure that only genuine medicines from authorized suppliers are dispensed.
NAFDAC advised patients to report any adverse effects to its nearest office, through its e-reporting platforms. The alert will also be uploaded to the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System (GSMS).
The circulation of falsified Postinor-2 underscores the growing danger of counterfeit medicines in Nigeria, highlighting the urgent need for consumer vigilance and strict regulatory enforcement to protect public health.
