Fueling Goes Digital: AA Rano Ushers in Nigeria’s First Unmanned Fuel Stations

January 9, 2026

In the predawn stillness of Nigerian cities, a quiet revolution is unfolding at the nation’s fuel stations. No attendants greet motorists, no handwritten receipts exchange hands.

Instead, drivers pull in, tap a screen, pay digitally, and watch fuel dispense precisely measured, transparently delivered, and entirely unmanned.

This is the future AA Rano Nigeria Limited says it is delivering with the launch of Nigeria’s first fully automated, 24-hour fuel stations a move that promises to reshape the country’s downstream petroleum sector.

Founded by oil magnate Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, the company confirmed that the first batch of automated outlets will go live within January 2026, with plans to roll out the system across more than 200 retail stations nationwide.

The innovation is powered by a partnership with Petrosoft Limited, a Nigerian technology firm specialising in digital solutions for the oil and gas sector. At the heart of the rollout is SmartPump technology, which enables motorists to refuel independently, make contactless payments, and complete transactions without attendants.

For many Nigerians, such innovation is long overdue. “It gives you confidence that the litre you pay for is exactly the litre you get,” said Chukwudi Okeke, a Lagos driver. “No more guessing, no more disputes, and I can fuel at midnight if I need to.”

AA Rano executives describe the system as a solution to some of the downstream sector’s most persistent challenges. Fuel discrepancies, revenue leakages, and opaque operations have long eroded trust between retailers and consumers. By digitising the process end-to-end, the company says it guarantees accuracy and transparency in every litre dispensed, at any hour.

“Our decision to introduce unmanned, automated stations reflects our commitment to operational excellence and innovation,” said Mr Mohammed Sule, General Manager, Retail at AA Rano. “This project sets a new benchmark for reliability, speed, and transparency, ensuring that customers can refuel with confidence whenever they need.”

For Petrosoft, the project validates locally developed technology built to global standards. Dr Joshua Denila, the company’s CEO, said the SmartPump system covers not only retail automation but also corporate fleet management, automatic tank monitoring, and cloud-based inventory tracking, providing transparency and efficiency across the board.

Industry analysts say the initiative comes at a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s energy sector, which is navigating deregulation, rising costs, and growing consumer demand for accountability. While the long-term effects on employment remain a topic of discussion, there is consensus that AA Rano’s unmanned stations signal a broader shift toward technology-driven solutions in fuel retailing.

Whether refuelling at midnight or during peak traffic, motorists may soon find that the future of fuel retail in Nigeria is powered not by attendants, but by smart technology, local innovation, and systems that never sleep.

For AA Rano, it is not just about selling fuel; it is about reimagining trust, transparency, and convenience in an industry ripe for transformation.
