Wike Warns APC Secretary Basiru: ‘Rivers Is a No-Go Area’

January 5, 2026

Former Rivers State Governor and current political heavyweight Nyesom Wike has issued a stern warning to the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, cautioning him against making provocative statements about Rivers State politics.

Speaking at a political gathering in Oyigbo Local Government Area, The FCT minister Wike said, “Don’t take our support for President Tinubu for granted. You have to be very careful with the statements you make. Carry your hand to Rivers State; if your hand burns, don’t say na me burn am.” He described Rivers State as a “no-go area” for meddling by external actors or political figures attempting to influence local dynamics.

The warning follows comments from APC officials, including Victor Giadom, who had referred to Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a “so-called governor.” Senator Basiru had publicly criticised Giadom’s remarks, prompting Wike’s response.

Wike emphasized that while Rivers stakeholders support President Tinubu, outsiders should exercise caution in public statements and interventions. His remarks underline the governor’s strong grip on local political discourse and his readiness to challenge perceived interference in the state’s political affairs.

Political analysts say the exchange reflects ongoing tensions between APC leadership figures and Wike, highlighting the former governor’s influence and assertive stance on safeguarding Rivers State’s political autonomy even as he maintains alignment with the President’s administration.
