Tinubu Withdraws Police From VIP Escorts, Orders Redeployment to Communities

November 23, 2025

President Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers assigned to guard Very Important Persons (VIPs), ordering their redeployment to core policing duties across the country.

The directive was issued on Sunday during a high-level security meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with service chiefs and the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) in attendance.

Under the new arrangement, VIPs seeking armed protection will now be required to obtain security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), according to presidential adviser, Bayo Onanuga.

The move comes amid mounting concerns over inadequate police presence, particularly in rural and remote communities where police stations are sparsely manned, weakening the capacity to protect residents.

President Tinubu, who has repeatedly emphasised the need to strengthen national security, said the measure is aimed at boosting police visibility and response in communities grappling with rising criminal activities.

To reinforce the effort, the President has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers, alongside an ongoing collaboration with state governments to upgrade police training facilities nationwide.

Those present at the closed-door meeting included the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Director-General of the DSS, Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
