Sen Sani, Obi Mourn Brig. Gen. Uba, Call for Stronger Action Against Terrorism

November 19, 2025

Prominent political figures have expressed deep sorrow over the reported killing of Brigadier General M. Uba in a terrorist attack in Borno State, paying tribute to his bravery and urging the Federal Government to reinforce Nigeria’s security response.

In a message posted on Tuesday, Senator Shehu Sani condemned the killing and criticised the use of propaganda videos by terrorists, describing them as cowardly attempts to project power and intimidate the public.

“Whenever terrorists post a video of the murder or kidnapping of their victims, it’s to cowardly portray their power and send a threatening message to the world,” Sani wrote. He insisted that such “evil antics must not dampen the spirit of a nation confronting them.”

“The killing of Brigadier General M. Uba is a tragic loss to our country but a great sacrifice that will forever be appreciated,” he added. “He was a brave and gallant soldier… We must emphasise celebrating his courage and patriotism and never glorify their crimes, cruelty, and cowardice.”

Sani called on the military to investigate any lapses that may have contributed to the deaths of the senior officer and other personnel.

Also former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed profound sadness over what he described as the brutal murder of Brigadier General Uba and other troops who were “courageously fighting terrorists to protect the rest of us.”

Obi, who said he returned to Nigeria on Tuesday, extended condolences to the families of the fallen officers and saluted the commitment of the nation’s armed forces.

“I salute the gallantry of all our military personnel who, day after day, make enormous sacrifices including the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to overhaul and strengthen the country’s security architecture, provide adequate equipment and intelligence support, and ensure that those behind the attacks are swiftly brought to justice.

“Nigeria must honour its heroes not only with words, but by building a nation where their labour and sacrifices contribute to lasting peace, safety, and national renewal,” Obi stated.

The Nigerian Army has not yet issued an updated statement following ISWAP’s claim that Brigadier General Uba was executed after the ambush. Earlier, the Army insisted that the officer survived the attack and returned safely to base.

Conflicting accounts surrounding the incident continue to stir public concern as calls for clarity grow louder.
