Plateau Governor Mutfwang Formally Joins APC After Quitting PDP

January 2, 2026

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of political speculation over his party affiliation, Prime Business Africa reports.

The defection was publicly sealed on Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, where the governor was received at a meeting of APC stakeholders and party executives. At the event, Mutfwang was presented with his APC membership card, marking his official entry into the party.

The development followed an earlier announcement by the APC national leadership confirming the governor’s decision to join the ruling party.

Mutfwang subsequently submitted a formal letter of resignation from the PDP, dated December 29, 2025, and addressed to his ward leadership in Mangu Local Government Area, thereby completing the process of his exit from the opposition party on whose platform he was elected in 2023.

Speaking at the stakeholders’ meeting, the governor said his decision was guided by prevailing political realities and the need to strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government in order to accelerate development in Plateau State.

He urged residents of the state to remain united, stressing that his defection would not affect his commitment to inclusive governance and service delivery.

Leaders of the APC, both at the state and national levels, welcomed Mutfwang into the party, describing his defection as a significant boost that would further consolidate the APC’s position in the North-Central geopolitical zone. With his entry, all states in the region are now governed by APC administrations.

The defection has further reduced the number of PDP-controlled states nationwide and has intensified discussions within political circles about shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say Mutfwang’s move represents a major realignment in Plateau State politics, a state historically regarded as competitive between the two dominant parties, and is likely to reshape the balance of power as parties position themselves for future contests.
