Paris Olympics: Falcons Gearing Up For Canada Friendly

Super Falcons are intensifying training ahead of their pre-olympic friendly against defending champions Canada on Wednesday. Pictures emerging from the team’s Jerez de la Frontera camp in Seville, reveal intensive training with emphasis on accurate passes, shots on goal, pacy moves and defence efforts.

The Falcons are returning to the Olympics after 16 years absence, having featured last at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Wednesday’s friendly will enable Randy Waldrum, whose team  has been handed a tough group that parades Brazil, World Cup champions Spain and Japan to test the impact of training so far ahead the Olympics.

Canada it will be recalled won gold in Tokyo three years after defeating their Swedish opponents 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in normal and extra time.

Meanwhile, Falcons last group opponents, Japan, fired warning shot at the weekend after thrashing Black Queens of Ghana in a friendly played as part of shape up for the Games.

Japan who have been at the Olympics five times, posted their best performance at the 2012 Games with Silver medal in the kitty.

They reached the quarter-finals in the 2020 edition. In contrast, the Super Falcons have made three appearances, with their best result being a quarterfinal exit in 2004.  It’s worth noting that Nigeria lost to Japan 2-0 in their last meeting in 2022.

As for friendly against Canada on Wednesday, Falcons and their Canadian counterparts have met five times in the past with Falcons winning once pulling a draw twice and losing twice.
