FIFA U-20 W/Cup: Falconets Begin Final Camping In Bogota

Perennial qualifiers and two-time finalist, Falconets of Nigeria, have flagged off two weeks camping in Bogota, the Colombian capital ahead of the kick off, of FIFA U-20 women World Cup.

Colombia 2024 is the 11th edition of the Championship which made its debut in 2002.

The Falconets have a long history of participation in the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, competing in every edition since its inception in 2002, with appearances in Thailand 2004, Russia 2006, Chile 2008, Germany 2010, and more recently in Costa Rica 2022. The 2020 edition was cancelled due to the global pandemic.

The best appearance by Falconets was at the semi-finals in Japan 12 years ago, and they have made it to the  quarter-finals in 2006, 2018, and 2022.

The Nigerian side again grabbed one of Africa’s tickets for the 2024 edition after aggregate-score defeats of Tanzania and Burundi.

The Coach Christopher Musa Danjuma tutored side, spent four weeks in the first phase of their final camping in Abuja, during which they won a series of friendly games, losing only once.

An optimistic Christopher Danjuma assured that the team will rise to the occasion especially with the two weeks camping ahead of the kick off on August 31.

“I want to thank the NFF for arranging the two-week camping in Colombia. This will go a long way to help the team, as the players will acclimatize very well and get familiar with their surroundings before the championship begins. I assure you that we will make the best use of this opportunity.”

Nigeria has been drawn in Group D where the Falconets will face Germany, South Korea and Venezuela.

Other African countries in the competition include Cameroon in Group A where they face Australia, host Colombia and Mexico. Morocco in Group C where they will  tackle  Paraguay, Spain and United States and Ghana in Group E where they lock horns  against  Austria, Japan and New Zealand.

The other groups that make up the 24 team championship include Group B with Brazil, Canada, Fiji and France while Group F has Argentina, Costa Rica, North Korea and Netherlands. Spain won the last edition in Costa Rica after beating Japan 3-1.

Falconets To Flag Off Campaign Against  South Korea September 2

Nigeria begin their first match 2nd September against South Korea, the second match will be against Germany on 4th September,  while the last group match will be against Venezuela on 7th September.
