New Format Champions League Draw, Real Madrid Open with Liverpool

Draw for the new format UEFA  Champions League was held Thursday, in Monte Carlo, Spain throwing up some fixtures that will definitely leave soccer fans at the edge from their seats from day one.

Manchester City were drawn against Inter Milan at home and against Paris Saint-Germain away.

Defending Champions, Real Madrid begin campaign against Liverpool at the Anfield amd Aston Villa face Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich while Arsenal host PSG and Also visit Inter.

It will be the first time in 21 years that the championship will witness format change. Hitherto 32 teams qualified drawn in eight groups of four teams. But this time 36 teams will be involved and play in Champions league phase

The top eight will go straight into the last 16 while a round of play-offs will decide the other eight teams.

City were the first team pulled out by former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. Cristiano Ronaldo was the man then tasked with pushing a large button on the desk in front of him to allocate eight computer-generated opponents.

The top eight sides in the league will qualify automatically for the knockout stages, while the teams finishing in ninth to 24th place will compete in a two-legged play-off to secure a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Teams ranked 25-36 are eliminated from all competitions.
