The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the brutal assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Anambra State, calling for the immediate prosecution of those involved.

The corps member, identified as Jennifer Elobor, was reportedly beaten and stripped naked by security operatives during a raid in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, has sparked nationwide outrage.

In a statement signed by NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) and National Secretary Dr. Mobolaji Ojibara, the association described the attack as “inhumane, barbaric, and an affront to human dignity.” While commending the swift arrest of the operatives by the Anambra State Government, the NBA insisted that justice must not end with arrests but be pursued to full prosecution.

“The assault on a corps member is an attack on our collective values of service, unity, and human rights,” the statement read. “We will closely monitor the case to ensure diligent prosecution and justice for the victim.”

The NYSC has also condemned the incident, calling it “unacceptable and dehumanising,” and confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to corps members’ safety and urged host communities to help protect those posted to their states.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo ordered the immediate arrest of the security operatives, drawn from a joint task force operating under the state’s Homeland Security Law. His wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, described the act as “disturbing and dehumanising,” warning that such conduct tarnishes Anambra’s image as a hospitable state.

The assault has drawn sharp criticism from public figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who described it as “primitive wickedness and savagery that no civilised society should tolerate.” Civil society groups and women’s rights advocates have equally demanded systemic reforms to prevent a recurrence.

This incident adds to a string of security-related attacks and abuses that corps members have faced across the country in recent years. Analysts say it underscores the need for better training, clear rules of engagement, and stronger accountability mechanisms for both state and non-state security actors.

As investigations continue, the NBA has directed its Anambra branch and human rights committee to monitor proceedings, vowing that the legal community will not relent until justice is served.
